Cane Toads

Originally from America, Cane toads were brought to Australia in 1935 to eat Frenchs Cane Beetle and the Greyback Cane Beetle which were destroying Northern Queenslands sugar cane crops. The Australian Bureau of Sugar Experimental Station imported 100 toads from Hawaii, the Toads bred quickly and in July of 1935, 3000 were released in the sugar cane plantations.

Queensland has the second largest popular of indigenous people. Before the European settlement in Queensland, the local tribes populated most of the areas. By the 19th century white Australians set up reserves for the tribe survivors, and ran them off of their land.

Days before I moved to Australia with my Australian husband, there was a show on TV that caught my eye ” The 10 most deadly creatures in the world- I jokingly said that if all ten came from Australia then I was definitely not going. Little did I know that I would have to thank the South American Tree Frog for being the one creature out of the top ten to NOT live in Australia and so here I am!
